BYOD

Updated Feb 03

The school supports the DoE Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Policy.  DoE Digital Devices Policy

Students can bring a range of devices to school and do their work on that device. A wide range of devices are suitable for use by students. The key is making sure that whatever device you choose meets the minimum requirements as set out by the DEC, especially that it can connect to or 5GHZ wifi network. The specifications can be found here - BYOD Specifications (docx 16 KB)

Coffs Harbour High School has established a BYOD store with HP Australia. HP are a contracted and approved supplier to NSW DoE schools. All devices include 3 years Next Business Day onsite Support. Accessories and Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) insurance are also available for purchase at an additional cost (Note: Our school has a number of laptop bags and sleeves available for FREE - See Mr Edmonds).  Please click on the link below to view the recommended models for BYOD use at Coffs Harbour High School.

Login: CoffsHHS

Many local retailers also offer many suitable devices. To ensure that you purchase a suitable device please take the BYOD Specifications document (link above) with you when you visit the local retailer.

Mr Dave Edmonds, in the Science Staffroom, can help students access the school's wifi network. Students needing that service should see Mr Edmonds during Roll Call.

Please Note - Wireless Specs: Wireless N, 5 GHz

High School wireless works on the 5 Gigahertz (GHz) range on the N wireless standard. This is not the same frequency as most smart phones, home and business wireless systems. These work on wireless G band. This means that any device trying to see the school wireless will need to have wireless N and be on 5 GHz range. Some wireless N devices may be marketed as "dual band" (meaning the device can use both 2.4 and 5 GHz).

Wireless capable does not guarantee that the device is going to work on the 5 GHz range. Many wireless N devices are 2.4 GHz and will not work on 5GHz wireless.

If you want to connect to the school wireless, you must ensure that your device has the following wireless specifications:

Device must have 802.11n on 5GHz which can also be known as Dual Band, 802.11abgn,

802.11agn or 802.11ac. NOTE: b.g.n wireless is not 5 GHz however if the specs contain an ‘a', for

example 802.11 a,g,n this will be wireless N 5 GHz. Wireless ‘a' is 5 GHz.

If you own an existing device that will not connect to the school wireless, ask the retailer about a

USB adapter that may be able to boost devices to the Wireless N 5 GHz range (eg. wireless AC

dual band USB adapter). A micro adapter is more expensive but is much smaller.

Students are responsible for looking after their devices at school. The school will not take any responsibility of the device is damaged or stolen. Parents are encouraged to get insurance for their child's device.

The following suppliers have indicated that they provide devices which meet the minimum specifications. Some may offer educational discounts. Coffs Harbour High School makes no recommendation toward any supplier.

  • Acer
  • Apple
  • Asus
  • Dell
  • HP
  • Lenovo
  • Microsoft Surface Pro
  • Sony

There is a range of FREE software available for students and their families to access including Microsoft Office and Adobe products.

Google Apps for Education

This suite includes a variety of tools that will benefit all students in and out of school. Sstudents can easily collaborate on documents, spreadsheets, and slide-show presentations. Your docs are stored securely in the cloud where anyone you share them with (but only those people) can work on them—either individually or all at the same time. They are great for:

  • Group-work
  • Timely feedback and reflection
  • Formative assessment
  • Collaboration and peer assessment
  • The Google Drive app can be downloaded and installed for free to act as a local folder on your computer or mobile device.

To access Google Apps for Education students simply need to go to any Google page and sign in at the top right with there firstname.lastname@education.nsw.gov.au credentials. This is the same account used to access the Internet, Student and Sentral Portals and emails.

Google Apps are browser based. This means the documents, presentations, files, images and contacts stored in a Google Account can be accessed from any device with an internet connection, including phones and tablets.
